"Allright, Cora, why don't you look around while I visit Gringotts? Just don't go anywhere... murky, allright?" Cora smiled and nodded. Her father patted her on the head, then turned and ambled towards the large bank. The case that held her wand was clutched in her hand, and she wanted to take it out and practice magic. The only problem was that she only knew a few spells, and the other witch's and wizards milling about Diagon Alley might not appreciate her lack of skill. Sighing, she looked about, then spotted Eyelops Owl Emporium. Intrigued, Cora headed over to the shop and stepped inside.
The room was dark inside, and had a variety of odors, some pleasant and others rather offensive. Once her eyes had adjusted, she moved towards a tall bird cage, a huddle of owls within. Most of them were the average barn owls, but there were also a few screech owls as well. They looked at her with large, lazy eyes, blinking as if bored. Cora felt a sadness for them. How mundane life must be to live in a cage. "Sorry fellows." She murmured, then moved on. Cora found rats, toads, mice, and more owls in the shop, but one animal in particular caught her attention. Lounging on a pedastal near the back wall was a silver furred cat. It's blue eyes were half-lidded, but she had the odd feeling it was watching her. Coming closer to the feline, Cora stood before it and hesitantly reached out a hand. The cat made no move to bite, so she trailed her hand down's it's sleek head and spine. A loud purr erupted from it's chest in pleasure. "You're beautiful." she said in a cooing sort of voice.
"That would be Artemis." A woman's voice suddenly said behind her. Startled, Cora turned quickly to face her. "After the moon goddes. She's got some very beautiful fur."
"I see." said Cora, recovering from her fright. "Is she for sale?"
"Yes, but only to the person she picks out. Artemis is kind of picky." Cora raised a skeptical eyebrow. "I actually think she fancies you." This pleased Cora, and she smiled a bit. There was weight on her shoulders then, and the young witch realized the cat had stepped atop them, laying across her neck. It's head lay close by her left ear, and the purr was almost deafning. "haha! I was right! You've just earned yourself a new companion, young lady." Although Cora dearly wanted to keep the cat, she had no coin on her at the moment.
"I'm rather short on pounds." she said sadly. The shop master stared at her for a moment, eyes calculating.
"That's fine. How much do you have on you?" Cora reached a hand into her pocket, drawing out some change. It was enough to buy a few school books with. The woman eyed it, then nodded. "That's fine. Give me that and Artemis is yours." Cora quickly handed over the money.
"Thank you. You're very gracious." The woman shrugged.
"Thank Artemis." She said, then moved away, slipping behind a back door of the shop. Cora stared after her a moment, then, with Artemis draped across her shoudlers, stepped back into the alley. Blinded by the bright sunlight, she nearly ran into someone as she stepped outside.

Griffin looked up from his list to the world around him. Everywhere his bright eyes darted he saw weirdos just like him acting as if they weren't any different from the world outside. That thought would have filled him with happiness if it wasn't for the fact that his parents were so mad at him that they had decided to leave him as soon as they dropped him off to not only shop by himself but to fend for his own. He shook his head looking back only once to see the dust his parents' car made as it faded away.
He stepped into the first shop on his list, Olivander's. The place was dusty and dreary. The room made him cough as dust and cobwebs seemed to fill his lungs with there clogging presence. As he succumbed to a large fit of coughing a somewhat tall man rolled down a aisle in a moving ladder. He stepped down looking at Griffin quizzically then he smiled and clapped him on the back.
" Hecko I'm guessing you shall be a new wizard at Hogwarts this year and are in need of a wand!" He smiled and before Griffin could answer he was done an aisle not to return for a couple minutes.
"Pine with a dragon heartstring." He smiled handing Griff a dusty box which thankfully didn't send him into a another fit off coughing.
Griffin took out the wand inside with haste his sapphire eyes filled with wonder. He couldn't even fathom how a simple wooden stick could fuel his magic. Before Olivander could tell him he gave it a flick and suddenly he was sent flying backwards to ram into a small desk with a flower vase on top. Luckily the vase didn't fall and he was able to stand back up with no more than a couple bruises.
" Well that wasn't good." He shook his head and then he studied Griffin for a moment and when he finally seemed to notice his bright eyes his face lit up in an idea and he quickly moved to a box and picked it out and flicked open the top for Griff.
Griff took this one with care afraid to flick it. It was bright red and a little thicker yet fit perfectly in his hand. With a tentative flick it glowed happily and he now had his wand. A Red Oak with Unicorn tail he was told.
Griffin was so happy about his discovery of the wand that a few minutes later he didn't notice when someone walked outside from another store. Only instincts save both of them and he moved to the side so that they only brushed into each other.
"Sorry!" He gave a sheepish smile as he noticed it was a girl carrying a cat. His hair turned a faint shade of red in his embarrassment for not paying attention.

Regaining her balance, Cora steadied herself and shook her head. Artemis yowled in annoyance, the tip of her tail flicking once. Looking at the boy she had nearly trampeled, Cora watched with wonder as his hair shifted color. "You're a metamorphagus!" She said in excitement. Catching her manners, Cora cleared her throat and shrugged. "Sorry, I've never met a shapeshifter before." Holding out a hand, she said with a friendly smile, "Cora Lestrade." Catching sight of the wand case, Cora's midnight blue eyes alit with interest. "I see you've been to Olivanders. How did the wand shopping go?" With some humor, Cora recalled her own hours of shopping and the frustration of every failed attempt to wield a wand.

Jeslyn had just walked out of Olivander's with her new wand. Jerk of a Slytherin had snapped hers a few weeks ago at the Leaky Cauldron. Tom had kicked him out and told him that if he ever came back he would turn him into a frog and leave him that way. It was almost ecactly like her old one. Only the wood was different. She looked up just in time to see a boy shift his hair color. she walked up behind him. "Don't let McGonagle catch you doing that. A weeks worth of detentions is what I got." she said from behind him. "But it was the best prank." she sighed dreamily. Her face was in a far off expression as she remembered some distant memory.

Griff backed away from the girl in fright as she shrieked happily though he immediately took it as anger. After a moment he realized this wasn't his mother and when people yelled it wasn't always in fury. He gave her a sheepish smile letting his hair turn back to a bright white. He had no idea that what he could do was so special and he was a little happy about her words. "Wasn't really that good I almost-" His words were cut off when another older girl came out of nowhere and gave him advice he didn't understand. "What?" His bright sapphire eyes looked at both of the girl with a mixture of curiosity and nervousness.

Jeslyn smiled warmly. Of course the first year wouldn't know who Professor McGonagle was. "The Gryffindor head of house. She doesn't like it when people use their abilities for pranks. I learned that the hard way." she said. She let her hair shift to a white-blond and her eyes to silver. She grinned again and walked away. She would go hook up with some of her friends at the Leaky Cauldron

Cora opened her mouth to say something to Griff, but an older student stepped forth. Like the boy, she could also shift appearance. Cora felt lucky to be in the presence of such gifted people. "I've heard of McGonagal." she said to Griff, the older student walking away. "He said she was to be taken seriously. She must be pretty stern." Drifting into though, Cora absently stroked Artemis's silvery fur. "Anyways." Reaching into a pocket, she pulled out a wrinkled slip of parchment, a list to guide her shopping. "Robes." She muttered to herself. Cora looked up and down the street, then looked to Griff. "I don't suppose you've bought your robes yet?"

Griff looked at the girl who could shape shift with bright eyes, happy to see someone just like him. Already today was looking up! He was smiling when he took his gaze away from the older girl to Cora.. " Robes?" Griffin was confused so he reached into his pants pulling out a paper just like hers and reading the word Robes, much to his surprise. " Well I guess I need robes." He smiled but then remembered he hadn't introduced himself. " I almost forgot! My name is Griff." He hurriedly put his list back into his pocket and held out a thin hand in greeting.

Taking his hand, Cora shook it firmly. "Good to meet you, Griff." She gestured towards Madam Malkin's Robes. "Do you want to come with?" Atop her shoulder, Artemis yawned and blinked her saphire eyes at Griff. Cora reached up and absently began stroking her new feline companion's forehead. Artemis purred loudly, the tip of her tail twitching.

Griff smiled happily. "Good to meet you too." He looked over at the shop she pointed at and then nodded. "Yeah I need some of those things." He gave her a sheepish smile knowing he knew nothing about anything to do with this wizarding world and he would need all the help he could get. He looked at the cat one more time before moving and gave it a happy grin noticing they had the same colored eyes. " Cool cat."

Artemis yowled loudly at Griff's comment, clearly pleased. Cora smiled. "Thanks." Gesturing for him to follow, she lead the way to the robe shop. They stepped inside and were almost immediately greeted by a plumb and friendly woman. "First years, eh?" she asked pleasently.
"Yes, that's right." The woman laughed as if remembering some distant memory.
"Allright then. Come with me dears and I'll get you fitted." Following after her, they were led into a side room. She gestured for them to step on small pedastals. Cora did so, and a robe was brought out and placed over her head, forcing Artemis off her shoulders and onto the floor. The cat twitched it's tail, moved to a sunlit corner of the room, and sprawled out on the floor. The robe Cora now wore was long in the hem and the sleeves. An assitant came out and began taking in the loose ends while the plump woman tended to Griff. Cora was smiling widely. She couldn't wait to get to Hogwarts. Looking at Griff, she asked, "Which house do you think you'll get sorted into?"

Griff was grinning happy that he had made a friend so quickly and more on the fact that he had a friend!! He had never known meeting people and becoming friends would be so easy but his parents never truly let him discover that. He still smiling when a well rounded lady greeted them in the robe shop.
The next few minutes passed bye quickly as the lady ushered them into a side room and Griff's eyes darted everywhere trying to see anything he could while being hurried away. He sat down looking around with interest when the lady started working on a robe for Artemis. He was trying his best to fade into the shadows but he shouldn't have tried since the lady caught him quickly and set him back on the pedestal and threw a black robe over his head. As she started working on the ends Griff was able to answer Cora's question even if he didn't have a real answer. " What are the houses?"

Taken aback by Griff's question, Cora stared at him for a moment. Everyone knew what the Hogwarts Houses were! Unless you were muggle born... "Oh!" she exclaimed, embarrassed. "I'm sorry, I assumed you were from a wizarding family, but I see now you're muggle born. That's ok, though. My mother is a muggle." Becoming slightly oblivious to her surroundings, she began describing the four houses. "There is Gryffindor, known for courage and bravery, Hufflepuff for kindness and loyalty, ravenclaw for their wit and learning, and Slytherin for their cunning and self-preservation." Looking at Griff, she asked, "So, any of those sound like you?"
